Thanks to Mike Mueller for his efforts in putting these resources together. The photo of the 3 firemen hoisting the flag on 9/11 is iconic. It’s also prolific – found everywhere. The C owner decided not to let Brett Baer, a Fox News personality, get away with posting it on his Facebook page and sued. Fox News settled. – probably one of the best stories I found out there about something that “almost everyone does”.

How To Build Your Email List

Adding subscribers to your email list isn’t always the easiest thing to do!

FREE – yup. Free stuff. Works every time. Even a chance for free stuff. I built a mailing list two years ago from 0 to 200 in one week offering a chance at some free kitchen items (and not very expensive ones).

The biggest mailing list I ever built had tens of thousands of people on it – I was giving away a free eBook. Yes, eBook. Also known as a PDF.

Add your mailing list sign up link everywhere – and an action button on Facebook.

I use MailChimp for many reasons.

Mike: modify your mailchimp forms to match your personality – why use the generic form?

Add a form to your website – maybe even in a pop-up (let’s discuss those numbers!)

Mike: I use one from Appsumo that is ‘smart’ yet I not smart enough. 😉

Mike: If you are writing different content topics – consider offering up a newsletter for each of those topics separately. Giving your reader what they want is the important part.

FB Ads: Run an ad campaign

Blogging vs Community Building

Community Building is developing authentic relationships between people.

Blogging is like a newspaper or a radio talk show: having guest bloggers, associate bloggers, etc., is a part of community building. Allowing others to post (ie Facebook, Google+) is community. Active Rain was one of the early, more successful real estate communities online.

In blogging you publish. In Community Building, you embrace the ideas of others – or at least allow them to be shared.

Components of successful community building?

  • Establish community goals.
  • Establishing an initial pathway to reach the community goals.
  • Allowing users access to ownership.
  • Guiding users toward the community goals.
  • Be responsive to community activism by facilitating new pathways.
  • Let the community decide.

How To Secure WordPress (and recover from a hack)

Securing WordPress – and recovering from an attack

(Mike will be calling in from the car for the show)

Securing WordPress

  • Backup your entire site on a regular basis. Don’t forget. Also it’s good to put that file somewhere other than your server.  I store mine over on Amazon S3
  • Update, update, update.  Plugins, Themes, and the core.  The safest version is generally the newest version.
  • Speaking of that, hide your Version. Make sure you are not broadcasting the version of WP that you are using.
  • Always use secure and different passwords.
  • Use a secure username (not admin)
  • Display your name as something other than your login name.
  • Don’t use wp for your database username
  • Limit login attempts
  • Use security plugins (like sucuri, wordfence)

Recovering from…

Malware or Hacking

  • What was the last thing you were doing?  Messing with a plugin? Messing with theme files?

  • If it was editing, adding or deactivating a plugin… start by Deactivate all your plugins. If you can’t get to the plugins in your dashboard, go in via FTP.
  • Go to wp-content and find the plugin folder and rename it.
  • Did that fix it? Now start by adding back your plugins one by one.

Theme Files

  • Were you messing with the functions.php?  Usually via FTP upload a good version of the functions.php file (or whatever file you were last in.)
  • Did that work? Now always use a child theme and modify that instead of the parent.

Other stuff

  • Sometimes you don’t know what messed up – but something certainly did.
  • When this happens start with the plugins. Rename the plugins folder via FTP – if that fixes it, it’s a plugin.
  • If that doesn’t fix it – do the same with your themes folder – did that fix it? If it did, your problem was a theme. Like the plugins, start by adding them back one at a time.
  • “Error establishing a database connection”? It’s probably a bad wp-config file
  • If you still have a problem – try reinstalling WordPress.  If it’s a core file issue, sometimes this will work.
  • Check your .htaccess file. Using FTP, rename it. Did that fix it? If it did, by resaving your Permalinks, you’ll generate a new version of the file for your site.
  • It also should be mentioned – is it just a server issue? Is you host down? Is the WSOD cached? It might not be you at all.

Plan B

B is for Backup.  Simply restore a backup. That’s why you had the entire site regularly backed up and stored somewhere in the first place – right?  If you did, you could be just a click away from back to normal.

Remove WordPress version information by adding these lines to your themes functions.php file (Admin Panel -> Appearance -> Editor -> functions.php

function smedge_remove_version() {
 return '';
 add_filter('the_generator', 'smedge_remove_version');

Memes, photos in social media posts? Do they actually work?

photo of green grass and plowed field

Does using images in social media posts really make any difference?

Graphically Social
How about memes, photos in social media posts?
Do they actually work? says photos have the lowest organic reach says photo posts are by far the most shared.

Be right back, I need something powerful with which to scratch my head….

Okay so DATA on this is kind of funky. It’s easy to measure how many posts have images vs those which do not. It is almost impossible to find hard supportive data that any resulting actions are meaningful. This takes us back to the value of a LIKE or SHARE. Data does seem to demonstrate that posts with images are shared and liked more frequently.

“Another great example is a business owned by Caz and Craig Makepeace called yTravel Blog. It’s one of the biggest travel blogs in the world. They have 4.35 million followers on Pinterest. They have seen a 3- to 5-fold increase in traffic from Facebook to their blog, just from posting images with the overlay of a tip or a quote.”

When researching I found a lot of data talking about the success of social media sites that use graphics like Pinterest and Instagram but the data on how that converts to dollars is inconspicuous at best.

Speaking of images – Instagram was going to roll out a similar algorithm for its timeline. People don’t want that. A lot.

You’re probably not going to believe some of the stats we unveil in this episode. These numbers are crazy! How do you overcome it? You don’t, you work WITH it! Let’s talk about what that means.

Join me and Mike Mueller live and get in the chatroom. That’s the best place to ask a question.

We’re going to address the issue and challenges of marketing to a world with the shortest attention span in modern history. We’ll discuss how to capture and hold (hopefully) the attention of visitors.

  • Click-through rate on in push is 28% average (TWENTY EIGHT!)
  • Apps with push retain 46% of users for at least three months (apps that don’t retain just 13%)

Squeeze Pages – what, why, where, when, and how
WikiPedia – “In the field of direct marketing, the subscriber list is considered the most important part of a mailing campaign. Marketers devote a great deal of time and money to collecting a ‘list’ of highly targeted subscribers as a result.”
“A squeeze page is a single web page with the sole purpose of capturing information for follow-up marketing; that means NO exit hyperlinks”
WP Plugin for creating squeeze pages (has a learning curve but is very powerful)
Important Features (must haves) – Analytics (Google, Bing, other), data storage, auto-responder or connection to CRM (MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc)
Things to avoid – automatically making noise (up for debate), non-responsive design, Flash, links to other sites/pages, pop-ups (the idea is to have a linear flow with only one option: convert).
Increased bounce rate expected – because there are no outbound links the bounce rate on squeeze pages is insanely high. What matters with squeeze pages is conversions, nothing else. Time on site doesn’t matter either.

On Locking Your Credit

Lock Your Own Credit FreezeWe constantly hear about data breaches that expose personally identifiable information (PII) on millions of us. Now it’s 191 million (that’s MOST of us) registered voters. Some months ago I posted a “How To Lock Your Own Credit” without paying a third party (or trusting yet another organization with your valuable data) a monthly fee. In fact in my own state it costs less than $20. Fee to lock and unlock vary by state but here’s the simple process: How To Lock Your Own Credit (Freeze Your Credit) on
