Things to do on your website and online presence.

Website:

Change your password
Backup your website. backup the whole thing, not just the content. Do something safe with the file. (I send them to an S3 folder)
Update your bio, about us page.
Forms. Check your forms, test that they all work, where does the info go? What about a thank you page?
Mobile – does your site work on mobile? Tablet?
Google – is it listed? site:yourwebsite.com
Webmaster tools – sitemaps, crawl errors? robots.txt file?
Analytics – is it working?
Malware blacklisted – Sucuri Site Check https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/, https://www.google.com/transparencyreport/safebrowsing/diagnostic/

Social Media Profiles:

Change your password
Update your profile picture.
Cover image or background image
Check the links in the profile to other sites – do they all work? Make sure, if you have the link wrong it will take you to your profile and you’ll think that worked.
Update the short bio.
check the connected apps – do you need them all? https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications https://twitter.com/settings/applications remove any you absolutely do not need.

Google and the Title Tag

While search isn’t strictly social it is certainly one of the reasons we do social, to increase search performance and productivity. Matt Cutts, Google’s chief of spam, recently addressed an issue about the title tag, aka <title>, that many people aren’t even aware happens. If you have ever searched for your own content and seen a different title appear in the search listings then you know it happens, but maybe did not know how or why. You’re about to know both!

My favorite example for this one is the good old default “Home” or “Home Page” title tag. I recently picked up a client who does BBQ (very awesome BBQ by the way, and I am a Q-snob) and I noticed the title tag on their home page said “HOME”. Ouch, and they paid good money for that “professionally developed” website. But, I digress. When I find them in Google, however, the title in the listing is  not “HOME”, but rather the name of the company which has BBQ in it. A few years ago this would not have been the case and Google would simply have published the word “HOME” in the search listings.

Today there is a different method and it is because Google takes a little liberty and re-writes the page title to better reflect the content of the page. Since they are in the business of selling search results as their product this is simply a matter of packaging. According to Matt the title needs to be a concise description of the page which is also relevant to the query. The criteria for which is:

  • Short in length
  • Good description of page AND site
  • Relevant to the search

The Best Time To Post To Social Media Is…

You know I must have heard at least 200 theories about timing and social media (just FYI I include blogging in “social media” if you’re doing it right). All of those theories presented on “reputable web sites” or at some sort of live tech extravaganza…often by people who know far less about social marketing than you. Google it for yourself and see the answers. They are, of course, “all over the place”. One trusted source says the weekends are the best time. Yet another assures us that posting early on Tuesday is far and away the best time. Both are wrong, and both are correct. As you now should know there is no secret One Size Fits All to social metrics. It is up to you to either do or hire a little intelligence gathering.

 

Opinions Are Plentiful

While there are many opinions about the best time to post to social media, there is only one you or your business. The clientele you serve may have different schedules and habits than those of the guru you are consulting. Some years ago I had a client who owned a tattoo shop. They had high engagement near and just after midnight through the weekdays and barely any on the weekends. Contrast that with the average real estate or mortgage client and it’s almost opposite: high engagement between noon and 5PM (local times) and almost triple on the weekends in some cases.

One Way, Or Another

Like with anything there are as many ways to do something as there are people. I hope you will chime in with your recommendations and options so we can all see. One of the tools I have used and liked for gauging Twitter times is called Tweriod. It presents a simple to understand graph of when most of the followers of a specific account are on Twitter and when they are engaging. It also gives a report of the lifetime of the account for when the most engagement has occurred. These can be valuable statistics to anyone looking to use Twitter as a network building or information dissemination outlet. Below is a sample of @thekencook from just this morning:

Theory or Data Supported Facts?

Data, and make mine a double, please! If you’ve ever listened to me or read anything I have written about what you “must” or “must not” do tells you to find and look at the data. I have always said if you do not know how I will teach you, or you can find someone else to teach you. But, nothing beats data supported facts for one of your most important marketing channels there is: social media.

Selling In The Social Stream?

Recently I was made aware of a company called Soldsie who make it possible to sell items directly in the Facebook stream or from Pinterest. Unlike our typical interview, though I will see if I can arrange one, this bit is more about asking your opinion on this type of product – or activity. Selling in the social stream I mean.
